111 days diselva
from Lukas Eggenberger at
Today is my 111th day at diselva - so the idea for a blog post came about. But why exactly did this happen to me? We'll get to that later... Anyway, there's a lot to tell. So much, in fact, that I didn't even know where to start. So drum roll... HUNDRED! (hint hint, look at the headings)
Hello diselva!
July 2024 - I hear about diselva for the first time. Perfect timing - I was about to graduate and was looking for a job. Or let's say in the "finding phase". With some experience in sales & marketing, a sales role was the obvious choice. The more time that passed, the more I realised that although I enjoyed dealing with people, I somehow lacked that certain something in sales. The ability to immerse myself in a subject and really get stuck in. Acquiring new hard skills and gaining an in-depth insight into different companies was what I really wanted.
August 2024 and my meeting with Jan came at just the right time. We were just having a coffee and chatting about diselva. Here I hear about this role "Project Manager / Consultant". No industry focus, but often with a view to sales. In-depth consulting, but also technical support. A mix of strategy and implementation. Let's just say I was pretty impressed.
Unterstrasse 6
A former retirement home, completely gutted and modernised. Headquarters of START Global, where we are subtenants - so this will be my new "working home". No herringbone flooring like our neighbours (Frontify, I'm a bit jealous), but still parquet and exposed brickwork. Lots of solid wood, exposed concrete and a converted roof truss. Pretty cool, in my opinion. Talking of cool, there's a cold room in the house, a huge gastro kitchen and a portafilter coffee machine that you'll soon have to take out a mortgage to pay for. The roof terrace with a view over half of St. Gallen was the icing on the cake.
Namics ("Mafia")
Yes, Namics deserves a chapter of its own. Not least because I would hardly have come to diselva without our mutual Namics contact. And that brings us to the reason why I'm writing this blog. Fresh out of university, I'm a bit out of step with all the other diselva digital veterans. I'm not completely empty-handed, but I definitely have a few years of catching up to do. This makes it all the more exciting to join a team that has an incredible amount of know-how and experience. Still, I think the old-timers are happy to have a breath of fresh air every now and then! But back to the university.
Digital Transformation
A stumbling block in my university career! Winter 2023, somewhere at the university - 19:30. It's been dark for three hours and we've been sitting in the Digital Business Transformation lecture for three and a half hours. The cards are filling up in Buzzword Bingo, while my patience is wearing thin. I really couldn't get on with the course. Dozens of frameworks every Wednesday evening, filled with placeholders and unrealistic idea constructs - and then I end up in a company that has "digital transformation" on its banner. And that's a good thing - back to diselva.
Let's get staRted!
Day 1 was not just about the first customer project. The onboarding plan also showed that the learning curve would be steep. Which brings us back to digital transformation. Insights into ongoing projects showed me a completely different picture than at university. Instead of surreal models, there are usable artefacts on the table. Strategies are being developed from which concrete recommendations for action can be derived. And the results are actually put into practice! Well, I have to admit: from this perspective, the subject suddenly looks quite exciting. It turns out to be a discipline that is best understood through experience and lived practice, and is difficult to teach in theory.
Out of thE comfort zone
After almost 4 months at diselva, a certain routine has definitely set in. However, the biggest constant from day to day is that I am permanently leaving my comfort zone, although I would say that it is quite big. There are always new challenges, unfamiliar topics and situations where I am thrown in at the deep end. And it's incredibly fun! Whether it's running a workshop or implementing and testing technical concepts, every project brings new challenges. Not least thanks to the team's willingness and trust to let me get involved right from the start.
Climbing ST(D)airs
Finally, a look at the future. Metaphorically, but also literally. And yes, it's getting a bit symbolic now. I couldn't have imagined a better start to my career. From day one, I have been encouraged with learning opportunities, reinforced with trust and given more and more responsibility. When I look at the projects that are coming up, there are still some exciting levels ahead of me. So I'm really looking forward to the next 111 days. And after the chocolate-filled Easter weekend, it certainly won't hurt to take the stairs instead of the lift. You might even discover a little piece of herringbone parquet on the way up!
